[REDACTED] Sault Ste Marie, Michigan Level [ILLEGIBLE] ONCE 2/0532Z. Ground-Visual Ground-Radar Air-Visual Air-Intercept Radar Civilian One Varied

[HW: Orange object, size of a large star observed to appear to move at high speed with three passes Contd zig-zag from 70 deg elev at 180 azimuth fading to about 50-55 deg elev 110 azimuth Stops were for duration of 1 1/2 seconds No sound trail or exhaust accompanied the observation Sighting with naked eye Normal lapse rate with no inversion]

Speed too great for balloon although zig-zag pattern of flight indicates possibility Distance object traveled indicated speed of about 400 knots at 34,000ft Object in level flight at this altitude and appears to have the same elevation in all sighting and with the extreme shortness of the "stopping" indications are that this was an aircraft flying a generally straight course with a few slight deflection motions
