CONCLUSION Object [REDACTED] The unusually clear night almost positively accounted for the observer's sighting of the Diamond Shoal Light Ship approx 30 miles east of Ocracoke. Fix (Cont on the bottom).
BRIEF SUMMARY AND ANALYSIS Object round star-like and white. Bright white light, sometime with flashing red and green light on either side, that dimmed slightly periodically. Object 10-20 deg above horizon. E-M from observers. Object appeared to move up and down. Object visible for the whole period the observers were on duty. Observers viewed object through (7x5) binoculars in a 50 ft tower. WX unusually clear. NOTE: Star Sirius has some characteristics and is at 5 deg elev 120 deg azimuth.
The Diamond Shoal Light Ship has a 16,000 candle power light which is mounted 66 ft above the water. This light is fully bright for 21 seconds and dimmed for 12 seconds. It can normally be readily seen for 14 miles from the surface and with the naked eye.
