30 July 1956 Utica, New York Local GMT 30/1925Z XR Ground-Visual [REDACTED] Ground-Radar [REDACTED] Air-Visual [REDACTED] Air-Intercept Radar [REDACTED] Yes [ILLEGIBLE] ONCE No Civilian One object, 25 yards in diameter, black in color, round in shape. Maneuvering consisted of ascent and descent through clouds. Object seemed to hover at one point and ascend into clouds at extreme ascent rate of speed. Object "seemed to ascend into clouds whenever any aircraft came within four miles of it." Initial sighting was for 15 min, other sightings were periodic due to a/c flying in area. Was Balloon Probably Balloon Possibly Balloon Was Aircraft Probably Aircraft Possibly Aircraft Was Astronomical Probably Astronomical Possibly Astronomical Other: Insufficient Data for Evaluation Unknown This sighting was probably caused by a balloon. Black pilot balloons are generally released on cloudy days.
